The Square Project_Grid (2021-2022) is a revisiting of the square through a new lens, engaging with how this fundamental geometrical shape transforms into rhythm, dynamics, movement, space, construction, even sound.
Reconstructing the familiar, re-seeing the image
the square as a playful and radical tool for perception.
In this phase, I turn to the Grid (2021-2022), a tool traditionally used in design to organize and simplify, as a way to deconstruct and recompose images.
Working digitally, I take my own photographs (of nature, objects, my paintings) and through the grid, isolate fragments to reconstruct them into new, fragmented yet coherent compositions. Like assembling an unfamiliar kind of puzzle, this process reveals hidden rhythms, unexpected connections, and new ways of seeing within the familiar.
Original idea, design and direction: Despoina Filippidou
This work continues the trajectory of The Square Project, which began as a theatrical performance and evolved into text, installion and other forms of expression.
Each iteration reimagines the square a new, as a frame, a question, a constraint, a freedom.
In Grid, the square’s rigidity and precision meet the organic and the accidental, inviting the viewer to
re-see what was already there; to imagine other ways of perceiving and desiring, beyond the boxes we inhabit.
